David Bore: To Jim Adams,
I to worked in an old power station in Nottingham England from 1965-1969 as an apprentice in very similar circumstances to yourself. Just recently I was diagnosed with Pleurisy and Pneumonia. The only way I found out was by the excruciating pain associated with Pleurisy. At present am waiting the results of chest xrays but know damm well there is something really amis inside the chest cavity, with a continual nagging irk of a pulled muscle.
Jim I would suggest without delay, find another doctor and stress to him you require more tests regarding your dilemma, before it is to late as in my case, I know have to life with it and hope the specialists get the treatment right.
Good luck form Western Australia...

gordon brown: Dr Robin Rudd a consultant chest physician has told me that it is of his opinion that I am suffering from diffuse pleural thickening, but to prove it and make a claim for compensation from my ex employers the Ministry of Defence my surgeon told me that the only way to take a biopsy is to open up my ribcage and take a scraping from the inside of my lung , and that it was a very painful operation with a 2 week stay in hospital , he told me that the shadow and fluid in my right lung were too small to use an endoscope to take a biopsy . Has anybody with the same problem been told what the surgeon told me ? Even if I had this operation it would not cure me so I shall have to endure the constant pain until the disease progresses to a more deadly state then I will be able to claim compensation . No cure !! no compensation !! no hope !!
joyce peel: My husband has just been told he has pleural plaques, what should we be doing about treatment. Would like to be proactive not reactive!
gordon brown: patricia darcy I have the same problem doctors have prescribed codeine, ibuprofen, paraceptamol and finally gabapentin all of which were useless .It may be illegal at the moment but I get pain relief and better breathing if I use cannabis.
Steve Boundy: we have lost 3 uncles and our dad all to mesothelioma all where pipe-fitter welders ,they where all taken before there time due to work. We lost dad in 2002 ,we where luckey we had an extra 2 1/2 years after he was told he had this disease we all miss him very much
Carole Hayward: Please acknowledge receipt of donations totaling over £500 sent in mid december. My mother in law ( mother of my late husband who died from a mesothelioma) asked for contributions for the charity instead of gifts on her 90th Birthday . I would like to reassure her that the money has been received and will prove useful - Carole Hayward
Gillian: In answer to Julie P. When undergoing the process of applying for compensation for my Father who was the malignant mesothelioma sufferer, my Mother was asked certain questions in order to ascertain whether she was also exposed. i.e. did she wash his overalls etc. It would certainly be worth persuing, after all nothing ventured nothing gained!
Gillian: The website will be extremely good when you have managed to get all links etc set up. I found the information already displayed very interesting and only wish it had been available when my Father died of malignant mesothelioma in 1999. ADUK had not long been in operation at that time, but it was my first contact point and you managed to point me in the right direction to obtain the compensation my Mother so richly deserved. Many thanks and good luck.
ADUK Staff: Hi,
Just to let you all know we are still up and running, very busy but always here for advice and support.....
patricia darcy: So glad to have found this site - my Husband has diffuse pleural thickening, a result of working with asbestos in the 1970's. Can anyone suggest any helpful pain relief - or specific excercise that may help. Medical experts just seem to say well you have it and have to live with it. Any help from anyone would be so apprciated.
Jim Adams: Hi
I worked for 4 years as a maintenance technician in an old power station (built in 1933) followed by two years as a marine engineering officer on steam turbine vessels (all built in late 50’s early 60’s) In both jobs I routinely pulled lagging from pipes, valves, turbines and boilers, due to the age of the installations there was always substantial amounts of dust about.
This activity was carried out approx 35years ago. I realise that if any symptoms show it is then too late, but is there any tests that can give me any early warning, which may allow preventative treatment. I have spoken to my doctor but his attitude was that it was an irrational fear.
Look forward to hearing any advise etc.
David: Hi, can you give me some advice. In the 1980's I worked in a DHSS building in Glasgow when I was 18 years old, and some years after having worked there was informed (by a letter from that governement department - which I still have a copy was passed to my Doctor at the time) that due to the building work that went on at the time I was there I may have been exposed to Asbestos dust which was later detected in the atmosphere. The building was demolished not long afterwards. Now years later I am 39, I am noticing slight changes in my health - I am a very fit and active person and always have been but I'm becoming concerned about shortness of breath and chest pains which are now a common occurence. As yet I have not been diagnosed with any related illness and in truth I'm a little afraid to find out. Not sure what I should do or who to see about this. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
Wade: Have gained a great deal by viewing your website, it was too late for my family, as my father Rex tragically died of pleural Mesothelioma on 20th september. The information i gained here was more succinct and usefull than in many other places... Congratulations on a good site and the best of luck....... Wade Rowlett 10/10/2004
Tim: I like the new website!
eila lawton/pankhurst: Thank you, Kim, and all those who have come so quickly to our aid. With a disease contracted in UK power stations, you can feel out on a limb way down under in NZ. You have really changed that. Thank you for the practical and the psychological support.
Doug Mills: great website, hopefully it will help people all over the world
